Pentagon Reviewing US Forces in Europe

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a six-month review of American forces in Europe, citing the need for European allies to take primary responsibility for their own defense. Hegseth criticized European allies for failing to provide US forces with access to bases in Europe to launch attacks on Iran, calling it “shameful.”

NATO Response

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte noted that European allies and Canada have increased defense spending by $90 billion, a 20% increase over 2024. Despite this, Hegseth expressed concerns about Europe’s ability to defend itself, citing a lack of focus on defense and an overemphasis on social issues.

The Trump administration is seeking to reboot the 32-nation organization, turning it into a “NATO 3.0” capable of deterring any threat. Hegseth’s remarks came after the US announced it would no longer supply certain warships and aircraft to its allies in the event of an attack.

Implications for US Forces

The review of US forces in Europe will examine the need for American troops to be stationed in the region, with a focus on ensuring that NATO is moving towards European leadership in defense. The US has the largest armed forces in NATO and does not intend to withdraw its nuclear weapons from Europe, which are key to NATO’s deterrence.
