A Senate Republican has introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to reverse Biden-era diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in the military. The amendment, introduced by Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., aims to focus on merit-based promotions rather than diversity standards.
Meritorious Promotions
The amendment would nix prioritizing diversity for active-duty warrant officers, active-duty officers, and reserve officers seeking promotions. Instead, it would press promotion boards to focus on merit, qualifications, and leadership. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has pushed for the Pentagon to focus more on lethality and merit rather than diversity standards.
Banks’ amendment would also repeal provisions that bar the Pentagon from banning the use of gender identifiers or personal pronouns in official communications. The add-on to the NDAA would shift focus from diversity, equity, and inclusion training to instruction on military values like honor, courage, commitment, integrity, and excellence.
