Palm Beach County’s emergency management team is gearing up for hurricane season with a series of simulated exercises and community outreach efforts. The team, led by Director Mary Blakeney, recently conducted a simulated hurricane event to test their response and preparedness plans.

The simulated exercise, which involved over 125 people, aimed to mimic the challenges and scenarios that the team would face during a real hurricane. The team practiced establishing shelter locations, distributing supplies, and responding to emergency situations.
Blakeney emphasized the importance of being prepared and having a plan in place. ‘We have a simple 4-step plan: make a plan, build a kit, get involved, and be informed,’ she said. ‘Being informed is key, and we encourage everyone to stay up-to-date with the latest information and to get involved with local organizations and faith-based groups.’
The team also stressed the importance of community involvement and partnerships. ‘We work closely with our nonprofit partners, governmental agencies, and faith-based organizations to ensure that we are all working together to respond to and recover from disasters,’ Blakeney said.
