Caleb Hawkins, a sophomore running back for Oklahoma State University, is preparing for his first season with the Cowboys, reflecting on his Oklahoma roots and the legacy he hopes to build as one of the first Division I athletes from North Rock Creek High School.
Hawkins’ Journey to OSU
Hawkins, who joined OSU alongside Coach Eric Morris from North Texas, shared his excitement about playing for the school he grew up dreaming of representing. “I mean, it’s obviously amazing. I mean, unbelievable that I’ve gotten this far to be able to come here,” Hawkins said. “I mean, I grew up a big OSU fan, so being here now is just like, I can’t even fathom it. It’s just a dream come true.”
When asked about carrying the legacy of North Rock Creek High School, Hawkins expressed pride and gratitude. “I mean, obviously, I’m honored to represent North Rock Creek. They did so much for me while I was there, and I feel a little bit of weight on my shoulders because, you know, I’m one of the first Division I athletes out of there,” Hawkins said.
Team Goals and Personal Improvement
Hawkins also discussed the team’s goals for the upcoming season under Morris, emphasizing the importance of confidence and a winning mindset. “I mean, obviously we want to see ourselves on the biggest stage of America. We want to be at the Big 12 Championship. We want to make playoffs,” Hawkins said. “In my mind, there’s nobody that can beat us. I have to live like that because confidence is key to winning every game.”
Reflecting on his record-breaking freshman year, Hawkins acknowledged the momentum it gives him but emphasized the need to keep improving. “I mean, there’s always going to be something better. You always got to improve,” Hawkins said. “I know it’s fresh off of that, but it’s in the past. I got to just think past that, and I got to prove myself every day of the week.”
Hawkins set the FBS record for touchdowns scored by a freshman last year, was named the 2025 FBS statistical champion, and was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist, an honor given to the nation’s top running back.
As the Cowboys prepare for their first game of the season on the road against Tulsa in just under three weeks, Hawkins is looking forward to his first home game at Boone Pickens Stadium. “I mean, obviously from coming from a fan that had to sit in the stands, I’m excited for that first home game. Just walking out and seeing all the fans scream and all that orange and white and black,” Hawkins said.
