UK grocery price inflation falls to 2.1% in August, easing pressure on families

British families received a modest reprieve this month as grocery price inflation slowed to 2.1% in the four weeks ending Aug. 9, the lowest rate since October 2024, according to Worldpanel by Numerator. The decline follows a series of reports that showed inflation at 2.6% in July and 3.0% in June.

What the numbers mean for shoppers

The latest Worldpanel snapshot, which tracks consumer behaviour and price trends, suggests that the combination of fierce supermarket competition, consumer resistance to further price hikes, and better hedging by suppliers has kept food‑price growth below earlier forecasts. Official UK inflation figures for July are due later this week, but the Worldpanel data provides an early indication that household budgets may face less strain.

Sales growth and promotional activity

Overall grocery sales increased 2.5% year‑on‑year over the same four‑week period, with nearly one‑third of transactions (31.3%) involving a promotional deal. Seasonal factors also boosted specific categories: sun‑cream sales jumped 58.4% and ice‑cream or sorbet sales rose 26.1% as hot weather persisted.

Retailer performance

Among the major chains, Tesco reported a 1.8% year‑on‑year sales increase but saw its market share dip for the third consecutive report, falling to 27.8% from 28.1% a year earlier. Sainsbury’s posted a stronger 3.5% sales rise, holding a 15.2% share of the market. While Marks & Spencer is not fully covered in the Worldpanel set, it remains the fastest‑growing food retailer with a 15.9% jump in grocery sales.

Online‑only supermarket Ocado recorded the second‑fastest growth at 13.1%, and discount grocer Lidl grew 8.5%. Asda’s sales slipped 0.2%, but the decline marks its best performance since March 2024. Other players such as Aldi, Morrisons, the Co‑operative, Waitrose, Iceland and smaller chains showed modest gains ranging from 1.1% to 5.1%.

Political context

New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has placed cost‑of‑living concerns high on his agenda, emphasizing the need to protect families from rising expenses. While the inflation slowdown offers short‑term relief, policymakers continue to monitor food‑price dynamics as part of broader economic stewardship.

Looking ahead

With official inflation data for July pending, analysts will watch whether the downward trend in grocery price growth persists. Continued competition among supermarkets and disciplined pricing strategies could further ease the burden on households, but any resurgence in global commodity costs or supply‑chain disruptions could reverse the gains.

For consumers, the current environment underscores the value of price comparison, promotional hunting, and strategic purchasing, especially as seasonal items like sun‑cream and ice‑cream see sharp price movements.
