Osceola County voters will have the opportunity to decide on a property tax to fund public and charter schools in the upcoming November election. The School District of Osceola County’s referendum question has been placed on the ballot after the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners took the necessary procedural step under state law.
Proposed Tax Details
The proposed 1-mill property tax would mean property owners would pay an additional $1 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. This translates to about $100 per year for a home with a taxable value of $100,000. The millage would last for four years, starting in 2027, and is expected to generate approximately $285 million for the district.
According to Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff, without this funding, the district could face budget cuts, affecting essential operating expenses such as competitive compensation and benefits for teachers and staff, safety and security personnel, academic programs, arts, music, athletics, and student activities.
