Fort Worth has temporarily paused signups for its free mobile spay and neuter clinic due to an overwhelming response from the community. The clinic, which offers free spay and neuter surgeries, microchipping, and vaccinations, has received about 4,000 signups since its launch.
Program Details
The mobile clinic can handle 10-15 pets per one-day session and is staffed by city staff, including a medical supervisor, veterinary technician, veterinarian, and other support personnel. The clinic’s goal is to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce pet overpopulation by bringing free veterinary services into neighborhoods.
The city has been recruiting volunteer veterinarians to help with the clinic and is exploring ways to expand the service to include more surgery days or expand into the city’s shelters, which have higher surgical capacity. Private clinics charge over $200 for similar surgeries, with prices varying depending on the size, breed, and sex of the animal.
The city’s animal care and control staff are notifying pet owners next up on the waiting list and are mapping out future surgery locations based on metrics such as animal shelter intake and call volume by ZIP code.
