Ormond Beach negotiates $2.5 M purchase of former Osceola Elementary for new community park

Ormond Beach city leaders are actively negotiating with the Volusia County School District to acquire the 11.6‑acre former Osceola Elementary property. The school closed in 2021, ending the heavy traffic that once clogged the surrounding streets. Residents recall the daily congestion and even a traffic accident that occurred right in front of the school.

Community demand for green space

Local families see the vacant lot as an opportunity to create a safe, walk‑able recreation area. “A park would be awesome,” said resident Darius Samar. “This is what this area needs.” Another longtime resident, John Roy, noted that the site’s location would allow children to walk or bike to a playground without crossing busy roads.

City’s master plan backs the idea

The city’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, released earlier this year, identified a shortage of beachside recreation space. Officials say a new park would fill that gap, providing open fields, playground equipment, and shaded seating for families and seniors alike.

Financial terms and alternatives

Ormond Beach has offered the school district $2.5 million for the property. Preliminary development concepts suggested the land could have been subdivided into 30‑40 homes, but city leaders prefer to preserve the site as a public asset. The negotiation is still ongoing, and no final agreement has been reached.

What the park could look like

While detailed designs are pending, city planners envision a multi‑use space that includes a playground, walking trails, and open lawns for community events. The proximity to residential neighborhoods means the park would serve as a convenient gathering spot, encouraging outdoor activity and strengthening neighborhood ties.

Next steps

The city will continue discussions with the school district and hold public meetings to gather input from residents. If the purchase is finalized, construction could begin in early 2027, with the park slated to open to the public later that year.

Ormond Beach residents remain hopeful that the former school site will soon become a vibrant community hub, offering a safe place for children to play and families to connect.
