Apple raises iPhone prices by $100 as AI‑driven chip costs surge

Apple unveiled a $100 price hike for both new and existing iPhone models on Wednesday, attributing the increase to higher supply costs driven by AI‑related memory‑chip inflation. The adjustment raises the starting price of the brand‑new iPhone 17 to $699, up from the previous $599 baseline.

Historical price growth

Since Apple launched the second‑generation iPhone in 2008 at a starting price of $199 for a 16 GB device, base‑model prices have roughly quadrupled. The iPhone 7, released in 2016, marked the first major jump, debuting at $649 with 32 GB of storage. Premium tiers such as the Pro and Pro Max, introduced in 2019, began at $999 and $1,099 respectively, and have continued to climb, reaching $1,199 for the 2023 iPhone 15 Pro Max 256 GB model.

New flagship and pricing tiers

Alongside the price increase, Apple introduced its most expensive handset to date, the iPhone Duo, which starts at $1,999 and can exceed $3,000 depending on storage options. The latest iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299 for 256 GB and tops out at $2,399 for a 2 TB configuration.

Why costs are rising

The primary driver behind the higher prices is a global shortage of memory chips, a critical component for AI data centers. Demand for these chips has surged as companies expand AI capabilities, pushing up prices across the technology sector. Apple’s former CEO Tim Cook described the situation as a “100‑year flood” in memory pricing during a recent earnings call, warning that supply constraints are likely to persist.

Impact of carrier subsidies

Another factor contributing to higher out‑of‑pocket costs is the end of carrier subsidies. When Apple first released the iPhone 3G in 2008, carriers absorbed much of the device cost, allowing customers to pay as little as $199 upfront. With subsidies gone, consumers now face the full retail price—approximately $650 for a standard model—without a two‑year contract discount.

What consumers can expect

Buyers should anticipate higher upfront costs for both new and older iPhone models moving forward. While Apple’s pricing reflects rising component costs, the company continues to offer a range of storage options and device tiers to accommodate different budgets. Customers may also explore trade‑in programs or carrier financing plans to offset the price increase.

Looking ahead

Analysts expect the memory‑chip shortage to influence pricing across the broader consumer‑electronics market, affecting not only smartphones but also laptops, tablets, and other AI‑enabled devices. Apple’s decision to raise prices underscores the broader economic pressures facing technology manufacturers as AI adoption accelerates.
