Oregon Lifeline program offers up to $24.25 monthly internet discount for low‑income households

In celebration of National Lifeline Awareness Week (Sept. 14‑18), the Oregon Public Utility Commission is highlighting the Oregon Lifeline program, a federal‑state partnership that helps qualifying low‑income households stay connected.

How the program helps Oregon families

Eligible residents can receive a monthly discount of up to $19.25 on landline or mobile phone service and up to $24.25 on high‑speed internet from participating providers. In addition, the program offers free wireless voice minutes and data through Access Wireless wherever coverage exists.

Oregon residents living on federally recognized Tribal lands may qualify for an extra $25 monthly discount, further expanding access for Native communities.

Who qualifies

To be eligible, applicants must receive benefits from one of the state‑approved public assistance programs, such as Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The rules limit assistance to a single benefit per household, meaning a family can receive either the discounted service or the free service, but not both.

How to apply

Those seeking free wireless service through Access Wireless can apply online at accesswireless.com. Residents who prefer discounted phone or internet service should submit an application through the Oregon Lifeline portal, available on the state’s website.

Additional information, including eligibility details and a list of participating providers, is posted at lifeline.oregon.gov. Callers can also reach the program’s help line at 800‑848‑4442, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.‑4 p.m.

Why connectivity matters

Reliable phone and internet service is essential for work, education, tele‑health, and staying in touch with family. By reducing the cost barrier, Oregon Lifeline helps ensure that low‑income Oregonians can participate fully in today’s digital society.

The program’s promotion during Lifeline Awareness Week underscores the state’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and supporting families who need it most.
