Oregon Ducks Hold Players‑Only Meeting Ahead of Portland State Game

Following a disappointing 39‑31 defeat to Oklahoma State, Oregon head coach Chris Fisk emphasized the need for stronger leadership. In response, the Ducks convened a players‑only meeting after the second game of the season – a step the coaching staff hopes will sharpen communication and focus.

Team leaders stress unity

Quarterback Dante Moore explained the purpose of the session: “Every team needs to debrief, talk about what’s on everyone’s mind, and get on the same page. It was very important because we needed it.” He added that the discussion has already begun to shape practice habits this week.

Linebacker Devon Jackson echoed that sentiment, noting the team’s commitment to change without revealing specific details: “We met, we talked, and things will be different from here on out.”

Key challenges to address

Oregon entered the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll, but early performance has highlighted several issues: a high penalty count, missed assignments, and mental errors that have stalled momentum. The Ducks also struggled offensively, rushing only 90 yards against Oklahoma State, being sacked four times, and converting zero of three fourth‑down attempts.

Through two games, Oregon averages just 104.5 rushing yards per contest, placing them 16th in the Big Ten. The loss of guard Trent Ferguson to a season‑ending injury further tests the depth of the offensive line.

Center Iapani Laloulu’s role

Center Iapani Laloulu, a senior leader on the line, acknowledges the pressure but remains confident: “Nobody likes losing. I don’t like losing, but I have to stay cool and calm. God gives us another day, another opportunity, and we have the rest of the season ahead.” His steady presence is expected to help the line adjust and protect the quarterback.

Portland State opponent preview

Portland State (0‑3) enters the matchup with a potent passing attack. Junior quarterback Gabe Downing has thrown for 513 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions this season, averaging 260.3 passing yards per game – fourth in the Big Sky Conference. Downing’s recent performances include a career‑high 280 yards against San Diego State and 233 yards with three touchdowns versus North Dakota.

Defensively, the Vikings have struggled, allowing more than 43 points per game, but their aerial threat could test Oregon’s secondary, which gave up 317 passing yards to Oklahoma State.

What to watch

Fans should keep an eye on center Iapani Laloulu’s impact on the offensive line and whether the Ducks can improve their rushing attack. Dante Moore’s leadership at quarterback will also be critical as he seeks to reduce sacks and increase efficiency.

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 18 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. It will be televised on the Big Ten Network, with radio coverage on KUJZ 95.3 in Eugene and 105.1 The Fan in Portland.
