Ontario Premier Doug Ford escalates trade dispute with President Trump over auto tariffs

Ontario Premier Doug Ford intensified his criticism of President Trump on Monday, delivering a profane one‑liner during a radio interview on Toronto’s Newstalk 1010. Ford said, “He can kiss my a— as far as I’m concerned,” and warned that Canada would respond forcefully to the administration’s new tariff threats.

Tariff escalation

The Trump administration announced a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods that took effect on August 22, with a Canadian retaliation slated for September 8. In addition, President Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles and auto parts to 50% beginning January 1, 2027. The moves come amid a broader trade rift that began in late 2024 when the United States first threatened 25% duties on Canadian products.

President Trump used his Truth Social platform to argue that the United States has long carried Canada economically, stating, “America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer! The U.S.A. will always be far bigger, richer, and stronger than Canada. Without the United States, Canada couldn’t survive—It’s where they get all of their money and, because of their current bad leadership, primarily Governor Carney, and his flunky, Ford, they will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States—Their key to survival.”

Ford’s response and rhetoric

Ford, often dubbed “Captain Canada,” dismissed Trump’s remarks as an attack on Canadian sovereignty. He highlighted that Canada purchases 400% more automobiles than any other nation, underscoring the importance of the auto sector to the Canadian economy. Ford also mocked Trump’s comparison to his late brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, calling the president “less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive.”

Beyond tariffs, President Trump floated a proposal to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” further stoking tensions. The White House referred Fox News Digital to Trump’s Truth Social posts for comment, and the administration has not provided additional remarks.

Potential impact on North American trade

President Trump claimed that Canada imposes tariffs of 400% or more on U.S. farmers and suggested that much of Canada’s electricity, oil, and gas flow through the United States. He warned of further economic pressure if Canada does not align with U.S. trade policies.

Canadian officials have not yet detailed a formal response plan, but the scheduled September 8 retaliation indicates that Ottawa is preparing to counter the new duties. The dispute raises concerns for manufacturers, farmers, and consumers on both sides of the border, who could face higher prices and disrupted supply chains.

What’s next?

Stakeholders in the auto, steel, and agricultural sectors are closely monitoring the situation. Industry groups in both countries have called for a negotiated solution to avoid a prolonged trade war that could harm jobs and economic growth. As the deadline for Canada’s retaliatory measures approaches, further statements from Premier Ford and President Trump are expected.
