Olympic speed skating champion Jutta Leerdam pauses competition for a season

Amsterdam – Jutta Leerdam, the 27‑year‑old Dutch Olympic speed skating champion, told Reuters she will sit out the upcoming season. The decision comes after a record‑breaking performance at the Milano Cortina Games, where she captured the 1,000‑metre gold in an Olympic‑record 1:12.31 and added a silver medal in the 500‑metre event.

Reason for the break

Leerdam explained that she is “following my feelings” and that retirement feels “too definitive.” She emphasized that she is not closing the door on speed skating, describing the sport as “part of who I am.” “One thing I know for sure: I won’t compete this season. You won’t see me on the ice,” she said.

Shift toward social media

With more than 6.3 million Instagram followers, Leerdam plans to devote additional time to creating video content and pursuing several projects already in development. She is engaged to social‑media personality‑turned‑boxer Jake Paul, a partnership that has drawn considerable public interest.

Season timeline

The international speed skating season is set to begin with World Cup qualifiers on October 30. Leerdam’s absence will be felt by fans and competitors alike, but she assures supporters that she remains committed to the sport and may return when she feels ready.

Impact on Dutch skating

Leerdam’s decision arrives at a pivotal moment for Dutch speed skating, a discipline in which the Netherlands traditionally excels. While her temporary withdrawal creates an opening for emerging talent, her record‑setting performances continue to inspire younger athletes.

Looking ahead

Leerdam’s focus on digital outreach reflects a broader trend among elite athletes who leverage social platforms to build personal brands and connect directly with fans. Her upcoming content is expected to highlight training insights, behind‑the‑scenes moments, and her personal journey.

When asked about her future plans, Leerdam reiterated that she does not intend to retire permanently. “I don’t want to completely close the door on something I love so much: speed skating. That wouldn’t feel right,” she said.
