Oklahoma County commissioners consider ICE training for deputies

Oklahoma County commissioners are set to discuss a proposal that would allow the county sheriff’s office to receive training from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Sheriff Tommie Johnson III has asked the commission to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Homeland Security, specifically authorizing participation in the DHS 287‑G program.

What the proposal entails

The 287‑G program enables state and local law‑enforcement officers to receive immigration‑related training and, when authorized, to perform certain immigration enforcement functions on behalf of ICE. In Oklahoma, the program has already been used by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as part of Operation Guardian.

Johnson emphasized that the proposal does not create a new task force or special unit. Deputies would not be required to wear ICE uniforms, conduct door‑to‑door sweeps, or target schools, churches, or workplaces. The training would simply give deputies the tools to assist in investigations that involve immigration violations, which the sheriff says would make operations more efficient and safer for the community.

Commissioners’ role

The county commission will consider the memorandum at its upcoming meeting. If approved, the sheriff’s office would formally request training sessions from ICE officials and integrate the curriculum into its existing law‑enforcement education program.

Commissioners have not yet indicated whether they will vote in favor of the agreement. The discussion reflects a broader state‑wide conversation about the balance between local policing responsibilities and federal immigration enforcement.

Community response

Local leaders and community members have expressed a range of opinions. Some residents view the training as a way to strengthen public safety and support victims of criminal activity linked to undocumented immigration. Others worry that expanding local involvement in immigration matters could strain relationships between law‑enforcement and immigrant families, and raise concerns about constitutional protections and parental rights.

Legal experts note that participation in the 287‑G program is voluntary for local agencies and must comply with both federal immigration law and state constitutional safeguards. Any implementation would be subject to oversight to ensure that deputies do not exceed the authority granted by the memorandum.

Next steps

Should the commission approve the memorandum, the sheriff’s office will coordinate with ICE to schedule training sessions. The timeline for deputies to begin receiving the instruction has not been specified.

The proposal adds another layer to Oklahoma’s ongoing debate over immigration policy, local law‑enforcement roles, and the protection of community values. Residents are encouraged to attend the commission meeting or submit comments to their elected officials before the vote.
