Columbia House, the longtime music subscription brand, announces closure

Columbia House, the iconic subscription music company that rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, announced it will shut down its operations after more than seven decades in business. The company, known for its aggressive advertising promises such as “Any 11 tapes or records – $1” and “12 CDs for 1 cent,” confirmed the closure following a phone interview with a customer‑service representative.

History and peak performance

Founded as a pioneer of mail‑order music, Columbia House delivered records, tapes, CDs and later DVDs to subscribers each month. At its height in 1996, the company reported revenues of roughly $1.4 billion, making it a major player in the home entertainment market.

Challenges from digital disruption

The rise of the internet and digital music platforms such as iTunes eroded Columbia House’s customer base. Although the brand attempted to pivot to streaming, it struggled to secure licensing agreements that could compete with larger, better‑funded services.

Recent ownership and current offerings

After its parent company filed for bankruptcy in 2015, Edge Line Ventures acquired the brand. Today, the Columbia House website operates as a minimal storefront, offering only a limited selection of DVD titles, including the second season of the AMC series “Dark Winds” and the 2023 film “Blackberry.”

Implications

The closure marks the end of an era for a business model that once shaped how Americans purchased music and media. It also underscores the broader shift in the entertainment industry toward streaming services that dominate consumer preferences.
