Oklahoma City firefighters are warning residents of the dangers of extreme heat, particularly when it comes to locked cars. According to Capt. Scott Douglas with the Oklahoma City Fire Department, a parked car can reach temperatures of up to 150 degrees in a matter of minutes.
Heat-Related Calls on the Rise
The Oklahoma City Fire Department has responded to 28 lockouts so far this month, with either children or pets inside the vehicles. Douglas emphasized the importance of being careful when heading out into the heat, especially for those working outdoors. He recommended wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and staying hydrated.
The fire department is taking steps to keep their crews safe, including providing ice-cold drinks and setting up rehab areas to check their vitals and ensure they are hydrated. Douglas also encouraged residents to be mindful of the heat and to take necessary precautions to stay safe.
