An Edmond couple, Jeff and Anamarie Hill, have developed a patented air-conditioning shade to combat the effects of extreme heat on air-conditioning units, with support from Oklahoma State University’s New Product Development Center.

Background

Jeff Hill, a service and maintenance director for power plants, used his professional background to create the AC Shade. The couple received significant help from Oklahoma State University’s New Product Development Center, where Anamarie Hill, who is deaf, assembled prototypes that OSU used to create design drawings, which helped the couple secure a patent.

“So, my whole mentality is making machines work better and longer,” Jeff Hill said. The AC Shade is designed to be durable and effective. “Versatile, adjusted, very sturdy. This is not plumbing PVC. This is a titanium-dioxide polymer that we developed and actually increased the UV rating on it,” Jeff Hill said.

Impact

The couple is grateful for OSU’s role in their success. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here. Without them, we wouldn’t have the patents that we have on it,” Jeff Hill said. Anamarie Hill also expressed her gratitude through sign language, with her husband interpreting.
