Nearly 100 advocates gathered at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to discuss potential changes to SNAP benefits, which could shift costs to the state and impact thousands of residents.
SNAP Error Rate and Benefit Changes
The federal government is urging Oklahoma to address its 11.04% SNAP error rate, and a proposed change could shift some of the program’s costs — currently 100% federally funded — to the state.
Cassie Gilman, chief advancement officer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, said, ‘We’re here to assist, but we’re really here to look to our recipients as experts that can help us inform as to what changes need to be made to the program.’
The meeting brought together community partners, pantry representatives, and advocates to examine who is affected by changes to SNAP eligibility and the barriers that prevent families from accessing assistance.
Advocates like Tori Overton shared their personal experiences with food insecurity to help others navigate the system.
