NYC sanitation department reports rise in needle-stick injuries linked to GLP-1 weight‑loss drugs

New York City sanitation workers are seeing a sharp increase in needle‑stick injuries, a trend the Department of Sanitation says may be tied to the growing popularity of GLP‑1 weight‑loss medications. So far this year, 49 employees have reported being pricked by discarded needles, bringing the three‑year total to 140.

Workers voice safety concerns

“That’s one of my biggest fears as a sanitation worker, is reaching for a bag and getting poked with something,” said sanitation worker Jason Leavy. The department called the injuries “unacceptable and very easily avoidable” and emphasized that they are preventable with proper disposal practices.

Public‑service outreach

In response, the sanitation department has launched a public‑service announcement campaign aimed at educating residents about safe needle disposal. The PSA urges New Yorkers to place used needles in hard‑plastic sharps containers. For those without a container, the department recommends repurposing an empty laundry‑detergent bottle marked “household sharps, do not recycle.”

Medical community notes rise in GLP‑1 use

Doctors at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, part of the Northwell Health system, confirmed an 11% increase in patients using GLP‑1 medications. Endocrinologists there already counsel patients on proper disposal, but the surge has introduced new risks for city workers. “I think we’re coming up against new risks that we didn’t know existed and trying to reduce the harm to anybody,” said Adam Berman of the medical center.

Proposed penalties

The sanitation department is also seeking higher fines for individuals who improperly discard needles, aiming to deter careless disposal and protect frontline workers.

Community reaction

Residents expressed alarm at the news. “That’s scary, dangerous and I don’t agree with that,” said Francis Nunez of Elmont. Christine Thomas of New Hyde Park added, “They need to give them something to put the needles in,” and affirmed that additional education is needed.

City officials stress that proper disposal can significantly reduce the risk of needle‑stick injuries and improve safety for the men and women who keep New York clean. The department plans to continue its outreach and work with health providers to reinforce safe practices.
