President Trump’s endorsement helps Darline Graham win South Carolina Senate runoff

South Carolina voters gave the Graham name another chance on Tuesday, electing Sen. Darline Graham, R‑SC, as the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. The runoff, held just weeks after Lindsey Graham’s death, was decided by a narrow margin, but the decisive factor was the high‑profile endorsement from President Trump.

Trump’s personal push

President Trump appeared at a rally in Myrtle Beach last week, telling the crowd, “Darline is somebody I’ve known for a long time. I asked her to do this. I said, ‘Darline, you got to do it,’ because everyone loves her. Everyone respects her.” He added that Lindsey Graham had trusted his sister more than anyone else, including the President himself. The rally was followed by a $800,000 phone‑banking investment from MAGA Inc., the President’s political action committee, which flooded South Carolina voters with calls supporting Graham.

From appointment to campaign

Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to finish the remainder of her brother’s term, a move many viewed as temporary. President Trump urged her to run for the full six‑year term, and she complied, launching a campaign that emphasized a “home‑front” focus rather than foreign policy. In a debate with Rep. Ralph Norman, R‑SC, Graham admitted limited knowledge of Taiwan’s strategic importance, a gaffe that prompted the President’s financial reinforcement.

Policy alignment with the Trump agenda

While Graham positions herself as distinct from her brother, she repeatedly framed a vote for her as a vote for the Trump agenda. She criticized Norman for opposing House Republican leadership and for occasional dissent toward the President, stating, “We already have enough problem Democrats, we don’t need a problem Republican.”

Legislative record in the Senate

Although she has served only a few weeks, Graham highlighted two key votes: the passage of a bipartisan Russia‑Iran sanctions package originally championed by her brother, and the confirmation of President Trump’s Attorney General, Todd Blanche. “I was in Washington for only two weeks before I passed the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act through the Senate,” she said. “I then passed the deciding vote to confirm President Trump’s attorney general, Todd Blanche. Simply put, I’ve done more in 20 days than Ralph Norman has done in 20 years.”

What the win means for South Carolina

The runoff victory secures a Republican hold on a seat that has been in the Graham family for decades. It also reinforces President Trump’s influence in the state’s Republican politics, demonstrating that his endorsement and campaign resources can still sway outcomes in closely contested races. Local GOP leaders praised the result as a testament to the power of a familiar name and a clear alignment with the President’s policy priorities.

Looking ahead

With the general election still months away, Darline Graham will now turn her attention to the Democratic challenger, positioning herself as a defender of conservative values, limited government, and the Trump‑era agenda. The race is expected to draw national attention and additional fundraising as both parties vie for a Senate seat that could prove pivotal in the balance of power in Washington.
