North Texas Volunteers Mobilize to Pack 100,000 Meals for Nationwide Hunger Drive

Dallas‑based nonprofit Tango Charities is turning a decade‑long North Texas hunger‑relief effort into a national day of service. On Sept. 19, the organization will host Feed The Country, a coordinated event that brings together volunteers in more than 70 communities across the United States to pack and deliver over 100,000 meals.

Local roots, national reach

The initiative grew out of Feed The City, Tango Charities’ signature program that began in North Texas and now runs roughly 50 monthly events in eight states, having provided nearly nine million meals to partner agencies. Executive Director and Chief Hunger Officer Nick Marino Jr. explained, “North Texas is really the heartbeat of this effort because Tango Charities was founded here, and this is where our Feed The City program began.”

Marino said the model’s success lies in its simplicity. “Growth doesn’t have to mean making something more complicated,” he noted. “The model has to be simple, consistent and repeatable while still allowing each community to own its local impact.”

Collin County leads the way

Within Collin County, events are scheduled in Allen, Anna, Celina, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Prosper, The Colony and Wylie. Volunteers of all ages—including families with young children, corporate teams and longtime hunger‑relief participants—are expected to gather at local restaurants and community centers to assemble meals.

“Feed The Country takes what Tango Charities has built through Feed The City and brings communities across the country together to do it on a single day,” Marino said. “It’s a powerful demonstration of what can happen when people collectively decide to show up for their neighbors.”

Meals stay local

Although the event is nationwide, each community will keep its meals within a ten‑mile radius, delivering them to nearby food pantries, shelters, schools and other nonprofits. “We don’t want Tango Charities sitting in Dallas trying to determine which family in another city needs a meal,” Marino explained. “The organizations working in those communities every single day know their neighbors and their needs far better than we ever could.”

If a local partner cannot accept all the meals, Tango Charities will coordinate with additional agencies to ensure the food reaches those equipped to distribute it.

Why hunger matters in North Texas

Food insecurity touches a broad cross‑section of residents. The North Texas Food Bank reports that one in seven people in the region struggles to put enough food on the table. Marino emphasized that rising housing, grocery, utility and transportation costs force families to make painful trade‑offs.

“When those basic expenses all cost more, food can become one of the few places where a family feels like they can cut back,” he said. “But you can’t budget your way out of needing to eat.”

Hunger in the area is not limited to traditionally low‑income neighborhoods. Volunteers encounter children, working families, seniors, veterans and individuals who have never relied on assistance before, underscoring that “hunger can exist anywhere, including communities that may look incredibly prosperous from the outside.”

How to get involved

Anyone can volunteer, regardless of age or prior experience. Participants choose a local event, register online, and bring the requested ingredients to assemble meals alongside fellow volunteers. The finished meals are then handed to local nonprofit partners for distribution.

For those in Collin County, registration details and specific locations are available on the Feed The Country event page. The effort showcases how a faith‑grounded, family‑focused community can make a tangible impact while reinforcing the constitutional principle of voluntary, private charity.
