Canyon County Sheriff’s Office Confirms Ongoing Probe of Vallivue School Land Purchase

The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that its criminal investigation division is still reviewing the Vallivue School District’s 2024 land acquisition. A detective with the division told Idaho EdNews, “No updates at this time, investigation still active.”

Background on the deal

In 2024 the district bought 87 acres of farmland from Dave Christensen for $5 million. The parcel was intended for a future school site. An independent appraisal, however, valued the land at $2.87 million, raising concerns about the price paid.

Idaho law requires trustees to obtain an appraisal before a purchase and to use that appraisal to establish the property’s value. At the time, Superintendent Lisa Boyd defended the transaction, stating the district had complied with the statutory requirements.

Comparisons to other Idaho school purchases

EdNews later obtained public records from several other Idaho school districts. Those records showed that Vallivue’s purchase was an outlier: five other district land deals over the past two decades were completed below appraised values, and in two cases landowners gifted portions of the property. Vallivue’s deal, by contrast, exceeded the appraisal by more than $2 million.

Board response and resignations

Vallivue trustees have not answered questions about the purchase. Board chair Toni Brinegar, who led the board during the 2024 transaction, referred EdNews to the district’s attorney. Since then, two trustees have resigned—Brinegar in June and Paul Tierney in August—leaving three members on the board. Boyd said both trustees planned to step down after their children graduated from Vallivue schools.

Next steps for the district

The school district is now seeking community members to fill the vacant trustee seats. Interested residents are encouraged to apply, ensuring the board can continue its oversight responsibilities while the sheriff’s investigation proceeds.

Community perspective

Local parents and taxpayers have expressed a desire for transparency. While the investigation is ongoing, many hope the outcome will clarify whether the district followed proper procurement procedures and protect the integrity of public school financing.
