CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A new poll conducted by Elon University reveals that a solid majority of North Carolinians back legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, while opinions on recreational use remain split along party lines.
Poll numbers show broad medical support
The survey indicates that 75% of respondents across the state support legalizing marijuana for medical use. Support is especially high among Democrats, with 89% in favor, but even among Republicans, more than half (57%) endorse medical legalization. This bipartisan backing suggests that many families see medical marijuana as a legitimate treatment option.
Recreational legalization faces partisan resistance
When it comes to allowing adults to use marijuana recreationally, the poll shows a more divided picture. Overall, just over half of those surveyed favor recreational legalization. Among Democrats, support climbs to 74%, while only 33% of Republican respondents say they would back such a change.
“There’s actually a majority of Republican voters in the state who are opposed to legalizing recreational marijuana or allowing intoxicating levels of hemp‑based THC in products,” said poll director Jason Husser. He added that the Republican‑controlled General Assembly remains the most hesitant body regarding any form of legalization.
Advisory council recommends adult‑use market
Earlier this year, North Carolina’s Advisory Council on Cannabis recommended that the state develop regulations for an adult‑use marijuana market. The council’s proposal aims to create a controlled framework that could generate tax revenue while protecting public safety.
Paul Armentano, deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), praised the recommendation as reflecting a broad consensus among North Carolinians. “This was a diverse cross‑section of interests of North Carolinians, and it is hardly a surprise that when you get these people together in a room, and you ask them their consensus on what a reasonable, rational marijuana policy ought to look like in North Carolina, they came back with the answer is legalization and regulation, and not continuing this failed policy of prohibition,” Armentano said.
