NNPA Calls on Black Press to Mobilize Voters Ahead of Midterm Elections

Washington, D.C. – On Sept. 14, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) held a reception in the Rayburn House Office Building to honor the Black press and to issue a rallying call for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

Press Freedom and Voter Mobilization

Presented by Events DC and entrepreneur Paxton Baker, the event preceded the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference (Sept. 16‑20). NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis told The Washington Informer that the Black press is essential to getting out the vote: “We have to continue to fight, we have to continue to report, we have to continue to mobilize, and we have to continue to inspire people not to become disillusioned.”

Congressional Support

Representatives Kweisi Mfume (D‑MD) and Gabe Amo (D‑RI) echoed the sentiment, highlighting the historic role of Black newspapers in informing a community that has endured centuries of oppression. Mfume noted, “It’s almost sacred history that, had it not been for newspapers across this country, God only knows where we would be.” Both lawmakers stressed that attacks on truth and diversity threaten the press’s ability to tell the full story.

Looking Ahead to the CBCF Conference

The reception also previewed a week of workshops, forums, and tributes at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Participants were urged to “participate in the storytelling” by supporting NNPA publications, advocating for press freedom, and engaging with their communities.

Community Voices

U.N. envoy and D.C. African‑Affairs commissioner Tiffany Lancaster encouraged attendees to use their voices and join organizations that amplify Black perspectives. “Our community is our responsibility,” she said, urging participants to make the conference count.

The NNPA’s call to action underscores the enduring importance of a free Black press in a democratic society and its pivotal role in encouraging voter participation for the 2026 midterms.
