The New Mexico primary elections concluded on June 2, but several races in Doña Ana County remain uncertain. Voting locations closed at 7 p.m., and counting paused at 11 p.m., leaving some results too close to call.
According to state law, any race results within a 1% margin will trigger an automatic recount. The New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office will canvass and certify the results on June 23, 2026, at which point any necessary recounts will be ordered.
In the gubernatorial race, Deb Haaland secured the Democratic nomination, while Greggory Hull will represent the Republicans. For the U.S. House of Representatives District 2, Gabe Vasquez (D) and Gregory Cunningham (R) are the candidates moving forward.
Several local races are still too close to call, including the Third Judicial District Court Judge Division 4 and the County Commission District 1. The county sheriff’s race also remains unresolved between Democratic candidates James Frietze and Vanessa Ordoñez, with Todd Garrison running for the Republicans.
Election boards are required to resume counting absentee and write-in ballots from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day until their work is completed. These efforts will ensure that all votes are accurately counted and that the democratic process is upheld.
Key Races and Candidates
Other notable races include the Lieutenant Governor position, with David M. Gallegos (R) and Maggie Toulouse Oliver (D) as candidates. The Secretary of State race features Amanda Lopez Askin (D) and Ramona Goolsby (R).
In the New Mexico House, several districts have clear candidates, while others, like District 32 and District 36, remain competitive. The outcome of these races will shape the political landscape of the region.
