Camp Bandage Returns to Broken Arrow: A Community Safety Tradition

Residents of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, are gearing up for the return of Camp Bandage, a cherished community event focused on safety education. Scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at Central Park on South Main, the event promises an afternoon filled with learning and fun from noon to 4 PM.

A Legacy of Safety Education

Camp Bandage was founded in 1983 by Dr. A.O. Gerner and Shirley Gerner with the vision of teaching children vital safety skills. Their son, Reserve Officer Paul Gerner, continues to uphold this legacy, ensuring the event remains a staple in the community. The program, now directed by Kurt Klein, has grown significantly over the years, attracting thousands of attendees.

The event offers a variety of activities designed to teach accident prevention and emergency response in an engaging manner. From mock car accidents to interactive 911 call simulations, children and adults alike gain practical knowledge that could save lives.

Community Involvement and Support

Kurt Klein, who took over as director in 2008, highlights the importance of community involvement in the event’s success. Local law enforcement, fire departments, and schools play a crucial role, providing resources and personnel to educate attendees. This year, the event will feature nearly 100 vendors, including first-time participants like Elm Oncology Pediatrics and St. Francis Trauma Center.

Volunteers are essential to the event’s operation, assisting with everything from setup to cleanup. Klein encourages community members to get involved, noting that roles are available for all skill levels, including face painting and food distribution.

A Family Tradition

Camp Bandage is more than just an educational event; it’s a family tradition. Many attendees have grown up with the event, bringing their children and grandchildren to experience the same valuable lessons. As Paul Gerner reflects on the event’s impact, he emphasizes the joy of seeing multiple generations benefit from the safety education his parents envisioned.

With its motto, “What you learn can save a life,” Camp Bandage continues to be a vital part of Broken Arrow’s community fabric, offering both education and entertainment to residents of all ages.
