Thirty Special Olympics athletes from New Mexico, along with coaches, leaders, and staff members, are traveling to Minnesota to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games, which begin Saturday and run through next Friday.
Competing in Multiple Events
The New Mexico athletes will compete in track and field, basketball, bowling, and bocce, joining more than 3,000 participants from across the country at the Special Olympics USA Games. Gracie Flanagan, who has been competing in track and field for six years, shared her excitement about the trip and the opportunity to join her friends at the games.
"I feel, like, happy, excited, and I’m proud," Flanagan said. Becks Rainsberger, communications manager for Special Olympics New Mexico, emphasized the importance of the event for the athletes. "We’re so happy we can send 30 athletes, but overall, we serve more than 3,700 athletes in New Mexico. So, it’s such a kind of like a rare, exciting opportunity for Special Olympics athletes to get to compete on a national level with other athletes from around the country," Rainsberger said.
