Rainy Thursday afternoon brought a fresh burst of community spirit to downtown Olathe as the historic house at the corner of 3 of Cups Bookstore & Commons opened its doors for the first time. After a soft opening for friends and family, the three‑owner team—Ashley Mantooth and sisters Starla and Jasmine Titus—welcomed neighbors, business owners and curious passersby to explore the new literary hub.
Local Roots, Historic Setting
The two‑story residence, long a fixture of Olathe’s downtown streetscape, has been lovingly restored to preserve its original character while adding a splash of modern whimsy. The owners chose a soft “romance” pink for the walls, a hue they say reflects the heartbeat of the house and creates a welcoming, feminine atmosphere. “It’s just very soft and feminine and welcoming, and we kind of chose it as the main body color of the house because it almost represents a heartbeat throughout the walls,” Mantooth explained.
A Book Lover’s Layout
Inside, the first floor features genre‑spanning shelves—thrillers, historical fiction, romance and more—alongside gift items such as bookmarks, candles and art supplies. Two large pink couches provide a comfortable spot for patrons to flip through pages, while a dedicated children’s area upstairs offers younger readers their own selection of books and cozy reading nooks.
Starla Titus emphasized the store’s inclusive mission: “We wanted to get a collection where everyone of any age or reading style would find something that is interesting for them.” The owners also plan six monthly book clubs, aiming to turn the space into a true community gathering point.
Future Café Plans
While the literary side is fully operational, the food and beverage component is still in development. Once licensing and vendor agreements are finalized, 3 of Cups will add coffee, tea, select cocktails and grab‑and‑go snacks, further enhancing its role as a social hub.

The name “3 of Cups” draws from tarot symbolism, where the card represents friendship, community and celebration. “We want to create this space for the community,” Mantooth said. “We want people to come in and feel comfortable, explore, be creative, and obviously, books are magic.”
Local business owners expressed strong support for the new venture, noting the added cultural value it brings to downtown Olathe. “They’ve all been super supportive and excited for us to be here,” Mantooth added, noting the enthusiasm of neighbors who have already been “blown away” by the progress made in just six weeks.
