Fort Wayne, IN – The Salvation Army of Allen County is launching its annual Christmas assistance program, inviting families to apply in person from Monday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 9. Applications will be taken at the organization’s downtown location, 2901 N. Clinton St., during two daily windows: 9 a.m.‑11 a.m. and 1 p.m.‑3 p.m. Staff will close the doors early if the number of applicants exceeds capacity.
Who Can Apply
Both families receiving government assistance and those who are not are eligible, provided they bring the required documentation. Households on public aid must present a photo ID for the head of household, birth certificates for any children under 18, and proof of the government assistance. If the applicant is not the child’s birth parent, custody papers are required. The Salvation Army also accepts a birth notice, tax return, or lease that shows the child’s name in place of a birth certificate.
Families not receiving public assistance must provide the same identification, substituting proof of income for proof of public aid. All applicants should also bring clothing and shoe sizes, as well as toy preferences for children ages 0‑14, to help the organization match gifts to each child’s needs.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted in person. If a family member cannot attend, a designated representative may apply on their behalf, provided they bring the required documents, a note identifying the applicant, a copy or photo of the applicant’s ID, and their own identification.
Questions or concerns can be directed to the Salvation Army before the application window opens by emailing [email protected].
Why This Matters
Each year, the Salvation Army’s holiday program brings relief to dozens of Allen County families who struggle to provide basic gifts and clothing for their children during the season. By offering a structured, in‑person application process, the organization ensures that assistance reaches those who truly need it while maintaining the dignity and privacy of each household.
As a faith‑based nonprofit rooted in Christian service, the Salvation Army continues its long‑standing tradition of caring for the most vulnerable members of the community. The program reflects the shared values of family, faith, and personal liberty that many Fort Wayne residents hold dear.
Community Support
Local churches, businesses and volunteers have already pledged to help staff the distribution centers and donate additional toys, clothing and shoes. Residents are encouraged to consider contributing to the effort, whether through monetary gifts, in‑kind donations, or volunteer time.
The organization reminds families that early application helps streamline the process and ensures that all eligible households receive assistance before the holiday rush.
Looking Ahead
The Salvation Army plans to evaluate the program’s impact after the holiday season and will adjust future application windows based on community feedback and demand. For more information about upcoming events and ways to support the organization, visit the Allen County Salvation Army website.
