New Haven assistant principal placed on leave pending DCF and police investigation

New Haven, CT – The New Haven Police Department and the state Department of Children and Families (DCF) have opened an investigation into Daniel Bonet, the assistant principal at James Hillhouse High School. Bonet was placed on administrative leave on May 26 after an allegation was reported that required DCF and police review.

Background and prior leave

This is not Bonet’s first administrative leave. In January 2019, while serving as principal of John C. Daniels School, he was temporarily removed following accusations of staff harassment and alleged failure to comply with DCF reporting requirements. Bonet denied those claims, and after being cleared he was reassigned to Hillhouse as assistant principal in August 2019.

District response

New Haven Public Schools spokesperson Justin Harmon confirmed the leave, stating, “An administrator at Hillhouse High School was put on leave on May 26 after an allegation came to light that required investigation by the Department of Children and Families and the New Haven Police Department.” Because the investigation is ongoing, the district declined to comment on the nature of the allegation and said an interim administrator will fill the vacant position.

Legal representation

When contacted by phone, Bonet said, “I think I want to talk to my lawyer. I am waiting on the situation.” His attorney, Don Cretella, emailed that no formal charges have been filed and that the extent of the allegations remains unknown. Cretella added that Bonet has been cooperative with police and “vehemently denies any improprieties.”

Police outlook

Police Chief David Zannelli told reporters the investigation remains open but is expected to conclude “pretty soon.” No further details were released pending the outcome of the inquiry.

Impact on the school community

Hillhouse High School serves a diverse student body in New Haven’s urban core. Parents and teachers have expressed concern about the disruption, emphasizing the importance of stability for students during the investigation. The district’s decision to appoint an interim administrator aims to maintain continuity in school operations while respecting due process for the accused administrator.

What comes next?

The investigation will determine whether any criminal or civil charges are warranted. If charges are filed, the district will likely follow its established protocols for disciplinary action. Until then, the focus remains on ensuring that Hillhouse’s students receive uninterrupted educational services and that the school environment remains safe.
