NBA Finals Ticket Prices Exclude Families from Attending

Basketball fans in San Antonio and beyond are finding it increasingly difficult to attend the NBA Finals as ticket prices soar beyond the reach of many families. The championship series between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks has generated significant excitement, but the cost of attending is proving prohibitive for many.

High Resale Prices

Tickets on the resale market have skyrocketed, with the least expensive seats going for over $700 and courtside seats ranging from $8,000 to as much as $25,000. This trend reflects a broader issue in the secondary ticket market, where high demand and limited restrictions allow prices to exceed face value significantly.

Alex Jacquez, chief of policy and advocacy at Groundwork Collaborative, highlighted the lack of caps or controls on the resale market as a factor driving these high prices. “They are going to go as high as they possibly can if there are no caps or controls put on the resale market,” Jacquez explained.

Impact on Families

The rising cost of attending major sporting events has left many longtime fans priced out of experiences that were once considered attainable family outings. “It’s really pricing out normal fans who would want to be able to take their family for a special outing to a game, and it’s increasingly getting worse,” Jacquez noted.

Many households are already grappling with higher costs for essentials such as housing, utilities, and fuel. Jacquez emphasized the difficulty of finding $850 to $2,000 in the budget for a basketball game when families are struggling with these expenses.

Historical Context

The dramatic rise in ticket costs is not a new phenomenon. Jacquez pointed to an analysis by The New York Times that found courtside seats for the 1999 NBA Finals featuring the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden sold for about $2,000. Today, comparable courtside seats can command prices approaching $200,000.

As the Finals continue, the high cost of attendance remains a barrier for many fans who wish to support their teams in person.
