National Hurricane Center monitors tropical wave off Africa with low odds of development

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is keeping an eye on a tropical wave that has emerged off the western coast of Africa. Forecast models show the disturbance will travel westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic at speeds of 15 to 20 miles per hour early next week.

Low probability of development

While the wave could spawn a low‑pressure area as it moves, the NHC assigns only a 20% chance that it will develop into a tropical cyclone within the next seven days. This probability reflects the current lack of organized convection and the relatively cool sea‑surface temperatures in the region.

What residents should know

Even with a modest chance of development, the NHC advises the public to stay informed. Residents along the Atlantic seaboard, especially those in coastal communities, should monitor local forecasts and be prepared for any updates that could affect the storm track.

WPBF 25 will continue to provide live coverage and alerts as the situation evolves. Viewers can also download the WPBF 25 News app for real‑time notifications and detailed weather information.

Broader Atlantic outlook

The Atlantic hurricane season is still active, and several other tropical waves are being tracked by the NHC. While this particular wave shows limited development potential, the agency emphasizes that conditions can change quickly. Meteorologists recommend keeping an eye on the official NHC website and local weather services for the latest guidance.

In the meantime, the NHC’s monitoring efforts remain part of a broader strategy to provide early warnings and protect life and property across the United States and its territories.
