NASA Plans Three Uncrewed Moon Missions to Lay Groundwork for Lunar Base

NASA has announced an ambitious plan to conduct three uncrewed missions to the moon later this year. These missions are part of the agency’s long-term goal to establish a permanent base on the lunar surface. The missions, named Moon Base 1, Moon Base 2, and Moon Base 3, are scheduled to launch by the end of the year, with the first mission expected no earlier than this fall.

Mission Objectives

The primary objectives of these robotic flights include scouting potential locations at the moon’s South Pole, gathering scientific data, and testing new technologies. These efforts are crucial for preparing the return of astronauts to the lunar surface. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the importance of a step-by-step approach, stating, “We intend to take an iterative approach, sending a demand signal to industry for a lot of landers and rovers and tech demonstrations, and all the scientific payloads these missions can accommodate.”

Industry Collaboration

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin is set to play a significant role in the first mission, having been awarded a contract to transport two science and technology payloads to the moon using its lunar lander. This collaboration is part of NASA’s strategy to involve private industry in its lunar exploration efforts.

Phased Approach to Lunar Base

The three missions are part of the initial phase of NASA’s plan, which is expected to last through 2029. During this phase, the focus will be on gathering data and testing technologies. The second phase, from 2029 to 2032, will involve assembling semi-permanent facilities to enable early habitation. By the third phase, starting in 2032, NASA aims to achieve a sustained presence on the lunar surface, with regular crew rotations and continuous activity.

Connection to Artemis Program

The moon base plans are closely linked with NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon. Last month, the Artemis II mission successfully sent four astronauts on a 10-day journey around Earth and the moon. The upcoming Artemis III mission, planned for 2027, will conduct technology demonstrations in low-Earth orbit, paving the way for the Artemis IV mission to land astronauts on the moon in 2028.
