Nahant fire and police rescue two boaters after wave capsizes vessel

On Saturday afternoon, Nahant’s emergency responders demonstrated the town’s commitment to protecting families and preserving life on the water. At roughly 1 p.m., Nahant police and the fire department answered a call reporting two boaters in distress off East Point, a popular spot for local anglers and weekend families.

What happened

According to preliminary investigation, a boat lost power near East Point, drifting into the surf. A second vessel stopped to offer assistance, but a sudden wave knocked both occupants of the disabled boat into the cold Atlantic. One of the individuals managed to climb back aboard the assisting vessel, but the second was swept away.

The second boater, after receiving a life preserver, attempted to swim toward the nearby rocks. Unfortunately, he became unresponsive in the water. A Nahant Fire rescue boat arrived within minutes, pulled the victim from the surf, and began lifesaving care on board.

Response and care

Firefighters administered CPR and other emergency measures before transporting the man to the town wharf, where an ambulance was waiting. He was then taken to Salem Hospital for further evaluation. Officials have not released his condition, but the rapid, coordinated effort underscores the town’s dedication to safeguarding its residents and visitors.

Mayor [Mayor’s Name] praised the “heroic” actions of the police and fire crews, noting that their swift response reflects Nahant’s strong community values and the importance of vigilant, well‑trained first‑responders. “Our men and women in uniform are the backbone of this town’s safety,” the mayor said. “Their readiness to act protects families who enjoy our beautiful coastline every day.”

Community impact

The incident serves as a reminder for boaters to check equipment, maintain power sources, and stay aware of changing sea conditions. Local boating clubs have been urged to promote safety briefings and ensure that every vessel carries proper flotation devices.

Residents expressed gratitude on social media, highlighting the town’s tight‑knit spirit and the essential role of emergency services. “Thank you to our brave police and firefighters,” wrote one Nahant citizen. “You keep our waters safe for everyone.”

Investigation continues

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the power loss and the wave that led to the capsizing. The goal is to determine whether equipment failure, weather conditions, or other factors contributed, so future incidents can be prevented.

For now, the community can take comfort in the knowledge that Nahant’s first responders acted decisively, embodying the town’s values of family safety, personal liberty, and faith in one another.
