Rescue crews in Nepal have successfully retrieved two survivors ten days after the nation was battered by devastating floods that killed more than 1,300 people. A Chinese hydropower worker and a Nepali woman were pulled alive from dangerous locations, offering a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing disaster.
Chinese worker rescued from Trishuli tunnel
According to a social‑media post from the prime minister’s office, the Chinese man, identified as Lu Haitao, was rescued from a 225‑meter (about 740‑foot) tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project. Nepal’s army, working alongside South Korean disaster experts, lifted him out by helicopter while a medic monitored his condition. Lu later told rescuers he had been shouting for help whenever he saw their lights, but they could not hear him until the final moments.
Lu was taken to a hospital in Kathmandu and is reported to be in stable condition.
Nepali woman saved from flood‑damaged home
In the flood‑hit town of Nuwakot, Nepal’s army announced that a woman was rescued alive from a mud‑filled house. She was airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment after rescuers gave her bottled water and wrapped her in a blanket.
Wider rescue effort continues
Authorities say roughly 900 workers are missing at 12 hydropower sites across Nepal, with an estimated 500 believed trapped in tunnels. International teams from India, China, South Korea and the United States are combing through debris, damaged structures and underground passages in hopes of finding more survivors.
The floods, which began on Aug. 26, are thought to have been triggered by a glacier collapse. Nepal’s disaster management agency reports more than 5,000 people remain missing.
