Myanmar military government revokes UN envoy Kyaw Moe Tun’s status

Myanmar’s military-controlled government said on Sunday that it has revoked the diplomatic status of its permanent representative to the United Nations, Kyaw Moe Tun. In a statement released by state media, officials described the envoy’s actions as “illegal activities” and said the decision reflects his failure to follow government instructions.

Background on the envoy

Kyaw Moe Tun was dismissed from the civil service on February 27, 2021, after the military seized power in a coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The envoy had been appointed by the previous civilian administration and, despite his dismissal, continued to serve as Myanmar’s UN representative because the UN Credentials Committee has not yet ruled on his status.

On February 26, 2021, Kyaw Moe Tun made an emotional appeal to the United Nations, urging the international community not to legitimize the military takeover. Pro‑democracy groups and the parallel civilian government, known as the National Unity Government (NUG), have since advocated on his behalf, seeking to keep him in the UN role.

Government accusations and next steps

The military authorities allege that Kyaw Moe Tun used state property and mission funds without authorization while cooperating with the NUG. They say these actions constitute a breach of protocol and justify the revocation of his diplomatic status.

Myanmar’s government announced that it is pursuing legal action against the former envoy through INTERPOL, the United States National Central Bureau, and other American agencies, as well as diplomatic channels. The move signals the regime’s intent to enforce its authority over foreign‑policy representation and to counter what it views as unauthorized lobbying by the NUG.

UN Credentials Committee pending decision

The UN Credentials Committee is expected to meet later this month, following the General Assembly session in New York. The committee will consider the dispute over Myanmar’s representation and could issue a ruling that either confirms or rejects the envoy’s continued presence at the United Nations.

Until the committee reaches a decision, Kyaw Moe Tun’s status remains in limbo, with the military government pressing for a formal removal and the pro‑democracy factions urging the UN to recognize the envoy appointed by the elected government prior to the coup.

International reaction

Human‑rights organizations and several foreign governments have condemned the military’s crackdown on diplomatic channels, describing it as an attempt to silence dissenting voices on the world stage. The United Nations has not yet issued a statement on the matter, awaiting the Credentials Committee’s deliberations.

As the situation develops, observers note that the outcome of the Credentials Committee’s meeting could have broader implications for how the international community engages with Myanmar’s contested government and the parallel civilian administration.
