Mountainburg farm family rebuilds after storm demolishes barn

When a powerful storm swept through the valley of Mountainburg on Monday, the Johnson family’s farm was among the hardest hit. Strong winds toppled trees, snapped power lines and completely demolished the barn that has stood on the property for generations.

Animals safe, but the loss is personal

Farm owner Steven Johnson said his first thought after the storm was for the safety of his animals. “First thoughts, of course, were, are all of our animals okay?” he recalled. A neighbor called shortly after the storm to report good news: every horse, sheep and other livestock emerged unharmed.

Despite the relief, the family felt the emotional impact of losing a structure that predates Steven’s birth. “I cried tears for a while because, you know, this barn’s been here since before I was born. I’ve spent hours upon hours and summers upon summers out here with the horses, with the show sheep. And it was just heartbreaking to see that it was all gone,” said Ellie Johnson, Steven’s daughter.

Extreme heat adds new challenge

With the barn gone, the Johnsons now face the task of keeping their animals cool in an 109‑degree day. “Our biggest concern here has been trying to get fans going and figure out how we can keep the livestock cool,” Steven explained. The family has improvised with portable fans and makeshift shade, but the heat makes the situation urgent.

Community steps in

Neighbors and friends have responded quickly, offering labor, supplies and even temporary shelter. “There was no one out there who wasn’t helping. Everyone got out. Everyone lent a hand. ‘Hey, I’ve got this. I’ll bring it down.’ ‘Do you need a place to stay tonight?’ Everything was provided for from this community,” Johnson said.

Local volunteers have donated building materials, tools and food for the farmhands working to clear debris. A nearby church organized a drive for water, ice and cooling equipment, underscoring the strong faith‑based support that often characterizes Mountainburg’s tight‑knit community.

Looking ahead

Steven Johnson said the family is focused on rebuilding a new, more resilient barn that can better withstand future storms. “We’re grateful for the outpouring of support. It reminds us that even when nature throws us a curveball, we have a community that stands with us,” he added.

The Johnsons plan to begin construction later this month, pending permits and the continued generosity of neighbors. In the meantime, they remain committed to caring for their animals and maintaining the farm’s legacy for future generations.
