From Marine to Satire Maven: Joel Berry’s Journey Through Faith, Media, and Free Speech

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of CROSSPOLITIC.

Satire can be a weapon, a refuge, and a career‑maker all at once.

Early Roots: Faith, Family, and the Military

Joel Berry grew up in Ohio in a household that blended fundamentalist Christianity with the rigid teachings of Bill Gothard. “My parents were both saved in college and raised me in a very fundamentalist Christian,” he recalled, describing a childhood that felt “like Moscow” for its strictness. After a brief, tumultuous stint at Pensacola Christian College, Berry enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in Fallujah in 2006. The experience, he said, reshaped his outlook and set the stage for later career pivots.

Returning home, Berry pursued a dream of becoming a missionary pilot, enrolling at Bowling Green State University. A 2013 congressional change that added 1,500 required flight hours derailed those plans, pushing him into corporate sales—a role he described as “young, married, having kids, just miserable.” A recurring dream of a light around a corner hinted that a different path awaited.

Finding a Voice: Podcasts, Satire, and the Babylon Bee

When a breaking point arrived, Berry’s wife encouraged him to explore writing. He launched a modest podcast in 2017 called The Petty Prophet, a project sparked by a conversation with Daily Wire founder Jeremy Boring. “Those who do, do. And those who don’t do, don’t do,” Boring told him, a line that ignited Berry’s commitment to creation over contemplation.

Berry’s foray into satire quickly caught the attention of the Babylon Bee. He began contributing articles, eventually becoming managing editor. “Seven to eight jokes a day, seven to eight Photoshop, seven to eight articles—that was the goal,” he said, noting the relentless pace that honed his craft. His sarcasm, he explained, became his “love language,” allowing him to blend humor with cultural critique.

The Twitter Firestorm and the Limits of Free Speech

In 2021, the Bee’s Twitter account faced suspension after a controversial post misgendering Admiral Rachel Levine. Berry recounted the internal check that was supposed to prevent such posts: “If you’re about to publish something that is going to make people mad, please run it by this person.” With the usual gatekeepers unavailable, the tweet went live, leading to a platform-wide ban.

When Twitter’s new ownership demanded an affirmation of a particular worldview as a condition for reinstatement, Babylon Bee’s founder Seth Dillon refused. “He had employees looking to him for money, finance, this is his whole livelihood, and he risked it all,” Berry observed, highlighting the stakes involved when corporate platforms police speech.

Beyond the Bee: New Horizons with Jeremy Boring

After seven years, Berry felt “joked out” and sought fresh challenges. He cited fatigue from constantly generating punchlines about gender identity: “How many more man identifies as someone else can you come up with?” The decision to leave was mutual; Seth Dillon sensed Berry’s readiness for change.

Jeremy Boring, now a key partner, offered Berry a new platform to blend serious cultural analysis with his satirical instincts. Berry noted that his audience often expected only humor: “People were shocked because they follow me expecting me to be the jovial Babylon Bee guy. And it’s like, this guy’s deadly serious.” This transition underscores the evolving role of satire as both commentary and conduit for deeper discourse.

Implications for Media, Faith, and Public Discourse

Berry’s journey illustrates how personal faith, military service, and entrepreneurial grit can intersect in the modern media landscape. His experience spotlights the precarious balance creators must maintain when navigating platforms that increasingly demand ideological conformity. As he moves forward with new ventures, Berry embodies a broader cultural conversation about the place of humor, free expression, and religious conviction in a polarized digital age.
