New Braunfels, Texas – The New Braunfels Historical Museum opened a new exhibit titled “Old Glory Stories” to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary. The exhibit, which will remain on view through the Christmas season, showcases historic American flags from the museum’s collection and tells the story of how German immigrants who founded the town in 1845 embraced Fourth of July traditions.
Flag history and local heritage
Curator Keva Hoffmann Boardman explained that the first settlers in New Braunfels celebrated Independence Day during the town’s inaugural year in Texas. The exhibit’s centerpiece is a massive 45‑star flag that once flew inside the historic Seekatz Opera House, symbolizing the nation’s growth as new states entered the Union.
Visitors can also see flags that represent each of the seven changes in the number and arrangement of stars as the United States expanded. Each flag is accompanied by interpretive panels that detail the historical context of the star configurations, helping guests understand how the nation’s geography and politics evolved over time.
Personal stories woven into the fabric
Beyond the national narrative, “Old Glory Stories” includes flags with deeply personal connections to local history. One such flag was draped over the coffin of a World War I veteran from the area; the exhibit shares his service record and the impact his sacrifice had on the community. Boardman said the goal is to link the broader story of the nation with the lived experiences of New Braunfels families.
“You should know your history,” Boardman told visitors. “And be proud of it.” She hopes the exhibit inspires residents to explore their own family histories and the role their ancestors played in shaping both the town and the country.
Visiting information
The exhibit opened ahead of the July 4 holiday and will stay on display until approximately Christmas. Admission follows the museum’s standard pricing, and the museum offers guided tours for school groups and families who want a deeper dive into the stories behind each flag.
The New Braunfels Historical Museum, founded in 1933, focuses on preserving and interpreting the history of New Braunfels and Comal County. Its mission includes documenting the town’s German roots, its development through the 19th and 20th centuries, and the cultural traditions that continue to define the community today.
Local educators and heritage organizations have been invited to incorporate the exhibit into curricula and community programs, reinforcing the museum’s role as a hub for historical education in Central Texas.
