Monessen School District weighs remote start amid fungal growth concerns

Monessen, Pa. – Superintendent Dr. Robert Motte told families that the district is actively planning for a remote start to the 2026‑27 school year. The move comes after air‑quality testing confirmed fungal growth on water‑damaged materials inside the middle‑school and high‑school facilities.

Fungal growth discovered in multiple locations

Last month, district officials found mold‑like fungal growth on building materials in the men’s room, women’s room, a women’s office, an adjacent office area and the concession stand. The discovery prompted a delay of the traditional in‑person start date to Sept. 8 while the district evaluates remediation options.

Safety and continuity of instruction

In a letter to parents and guardians, Dr. Motte emphasized that teacher supplies, instructional materials and other resources inside the affected buildings are currently inaccessible. “No final decision has been made at this time. However, we are actively preparing for this possibility so that our students can continue learning with as little interruption as possible,” he wrote.

The district has already purchased instructional resources that can be delivered digitally, and plans are under way to distribute technology—such as laptops or tablets—to students who may need them for remote instruction.

Precautionary testing at the elementary school

As a precaution, air‑quality tests are also being conducted at the Monessen Elementary School. Results will be shared with the community once the testing is complete.

Ongoing communication

Dr. Motte assured families that the situation remains fluid and that the district will continue to monitor conditions closely. “Please know the district is working continuously to evaluate our options and make decisions that prioritize the safety, education and well‑being of our students and staff,” he said. Parents will be notified promptly as more information becomes available.

Local officials and health experts stress the importance of addressing indoor air quality issues promptly, especially in schools where children spend many hours each day. The district’s proactive approach aims to safeguard health while preserving educational continuity.
