A Volusia County judge granted bond to Latana Williams, who is facing two felony counts for allegedly leaving her 3-year-old daughter in a hot car for two hours while she donated plasma in DeLand, Florida.
Incident Details
According to DeLand police detective Craig Walter, the child was left in the car with the windows rolled up and the engine turned off. The outside temperature was 84 degrees at the time. Witnesses reported that the child was unresponsive and foaming at the mouth when she was found.
With the help of bystanders, the girl was given CPR and revived as paramedics arrived. She required a breathing tube and a five-day hospital stay to recover.
The defense argued that Williams has no prior history of child abuse and that the vehicle’s gas gauge was on empty, and a computer tablet was found in the car, supporting Williams’ story that she left the car running with the air conditioning on and was facetiming with her daughter while inside the clinic.
The judge granted Williams a $5,000 bond, but not before sending her back to jail to be processed before her release. Her trial is set for September, and she is barred from any contact with her daughter until then.
