Modi urges BRICS cooperation to counter geopolitical tensions and supply‑chain shocks

NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the second day of the BRICS summit to warn that growing geopolitical tensions, supply‑chain disruptions and climate crises are harming ordinary people around the globe. Speaking alongside leaders of Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa and the newer members, Modi stressed the need for deeper cooperation among developing nations.

Technology and minerals become security concerns

Modi warned that the “weaponization of technology and critical minerals” could impede global development and shared prosperity. He urged the bloc to protect access to essential resources and to prevent their misuse for political leverage.

New early‑warning system for disease outbreaks

In response to recent pandemics, the summit announced an integrated early‑warning system for infectious diseases. The system aims to improve preparedness and rapid response to future health emergencies, reflecting the bloc’s commitment to collective security.

Calls for a multipolar world and UN reform

The joint declaration reaffirmed support for a multipolar world order and called for reforms to the United Nations, including its Security Council, as well as to global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Leaders also opposed unilateral sanctions and coercive economic measures, criticizing sanctions not authorized by the U.N. and rising tariffs that undermine global trade and supply chains.

Economic cooperation and local currencies

The bloc backed greater use of local currencies in trade and stronger cross‑border payment systems. It also highlighted cooperation on food security, energy, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and climate action.

Notably, the declaration marked a breakthrough in achieving consensus among Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—countries with competing regional positions—demonstrating the summit’s diplomatic progress despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Sudan.

Modi concluded by urging all members to work together to safeguard prosperity for the Global South and to address the interconnected challenges that affect everyday lives.
