Russian drone strikes train near Ukraine‑Poland border after diplomatic convoy passes

Kyiv – A Russian‑operated drone struck a train at Yahodyn station, close to the Yahodyn‑Dorohusk crossing on the Ukraine‑Poland border, on Sunday morning. The attack occurred just minutes after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt departed the station ahead of schedule, Ukrainian state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said.

Diplomatic convoy targeted?

Ukrzaliznytsia posted on Telegram that the drone’s likely target was the diplomatic train, which had left Yahodyn earlier than planned. The convoy was returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, a gathering of leaders and experts on security, politics, business and media.

Bildt shared a video of the incident on X, noting that the train hit was not theirs but the one that followed minutes later. “It was evacuated as the Russian drone approached and no one was hurt. Very good safety system,” he wrote, adding that his own train received only an evacuation warning.

Other passengers and casualties

Another train, carrying former CIA Director David Petraeus, was still at Yahodyn when the drone struck the nearby train, according to the rail operator. Ukrzaliznytsia reported no immediate casualties on any of the trains.

Earlier on Sunday, a Russian drone also hit a truck less than a mile from Polish territory, prompting border guards to temporarily close the Yahodyn‑Dorohusk crossing.

Official reactions

Johnson condemned the attack on X, saying, “I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning.” He added that the incident illustrates “the random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day — even on civilian railways.”

Ukrzaliznytsia said it constantly adjusts train schedules to guard against strikes, emphasizing the ongoing threat to Ukraine’s rail infrastructure.

Context of the conflict

The incident comes amid heightened tensions along Ukraine’s western frontiers, where Russian forces have increasingly used unmanned aerial systems to target transport and logistics hubs. While the drone struck a civilian train, officials suspect the timing was intended to send a message to the diplomatic delegation returning from Kyiv.

Polish border authorities have heightened security at crossing points, and NATO allies continue to monitor the escalation of Russian drone activity in the region.
