Following recent primary wins in the Midwest, top Democratic leaders are embracing unity with the far-left wing of their party. Former Detroit public health official and progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed defeated U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-MI, in the Michigan Senate Primary.
Unity Efforts
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has made calls to winning candidates in recent primaries, emphasizing the importance of supporting the victor. Pritzker stated that he wants Democrats to focus on winning elections to regain a majority in Congress.
Michigan isn’t the only midwestern state to adopt a unity approach. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Democrats have followed a similar playbook. Minnesota DFL U.S. Senate nominee Peggy Flanagan said that unity in their state would help Democrats earn a majority in the Senate.
In Wisconsin, Democratic Socialist gubernatorial candidate State Rep. Francesca Hong lost her race to the more moderate David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive. Crowley plans to do a “unity tour” with Hong, despite not embracing some of her policies, such as a moratorium on data centers.
