President Donald Trump’s fixation on the 2020 election results and other past events is detracting from the nation’s ability to tackle pressing issues, including future threats such as floods, heat waves, and pandemics.
A Nation in Need of Forward Thinking
Despite the results of over 60 legal challenges and investigations, Trump still claims he won the 2020 election. This mindset is not only affecting his ability to lead the nation but also influencing his cabinet and judicial nominees, who refuse to acknowledge his loss.
Furthermore, Trump’s administration is still waging the Civil War, with the president praising Confederate soldiers and his appointees to the Supreme Court ignoring the clear language of the 15th Amendment to protect the right of Black citizens to vote.
A Threat to National Security and Prosperity
The Trump administration’s emphasis on the past is also evident in its approach to national security and the economy. The president’s desire to build expensive, outdated battleships and his support for carbon fuels are examples of this backward thinking.
In contrast, other recent presidents have focused on moving the nation forward. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s slogan was ‘Forward with Roosevelt,’ and Bill Clinton pledged to build ‘a bridge to the 21st century.’ Barack Obama promised ‘change we can believe in.’ It is time for Trump to adopt a similar approach and prioritize the nation’s future over his personal grievances.
