Midterm Elections: Foreign Policy, Economy Take Center Stage

As the midterm elections approach, foreign policy concerns and economic anxiety are taking center stage. On a recent edition of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” a panel of analysts discussed the main factors driving the battle for control of Congress.

Foreign Policy and Economic Concerns

New York Times White House correspondent Tyler Pager noted that foreign policy concerns, particularly those involving Iran, continue to weigh heavily on White House officials. Despite brief drops in gas prices, recent upticks tied to ongoing attacks have created concern that energy costs will remain a primary issue for voters.

Lanhee Chen, a fellow at the Hoover Institution, stressed that household finances remain the primary driver for voters. “The economy is always the single biggest issue that animates voters as they think about what party they’re going to support,” Chen said. He added that Republicans face a challenging “expectations gap” regarding price relief and the end of foreign conflicts.

Intra-Party Dynamics

Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod highlighted key intra-party dynamics, pointing to Michigan’s upcoming primary between moderate Haley Stevens and progressive Abdul El-Sayed. “The bottom line is if Democrats are going to flip the Senate, we have to hold onto Michigan,” Elrod noted, arguing that a moderate candidate offers a stronger path in the general election.
