The Middletown Police Department and the Safety Council of Southwestern Ohio have partnered to offer a week-long course called ‘Safety Town’ to prepare young students for the safety challenges they may face when starting elementary school.
Course Details
The course, led by Middletown Police Officers Chris Fugate and Keith Maxwell, covers topics such as crossing the street safely, being aware of surroundings, and what to do in case of an emergency.
Officer Maxwell recently taught a group of young students about the ‘danger zone’ around a school bus and the importance of grabbing the handrail when boarding.
The Safety Town program has been in operation for 48 years, and its interactive safety lessons have helped generations of soon-to-be kindergartners prepare for life in grade school.
Program leaders encourage parents to have discussions with their children and answer any questions they may have about safety.
The week-long program is offered for free to any children entering kindergarten, and registration is closed for this year.
