Mercedes-Benz’s CEO, Ola Kaellenius, has pledged to shield the company’s US business from a possible sales ban due to concerns in Washington over the German carmaker’s Chinese investors.
US Market Importance
The US market is crucial for Mercedes, with sales growing by 15% in the first six months of the year, helping to offset some of the pain in China. The company has invested over $7 billion in its US operations, including $4 billion to boost SUV production at its Alabama plant.
Kaellenius stated that the company is monitoring the US debate closely and is ‘deeply involved’ in talks with relevant parties. Mercedes could set up engine production in the US, depending on the outcome of a North American trade pact revamp currently under negotiation.
