Michigan State University adds seminars on antisemitism and Islamophobia

Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing is expanding its undergraduate curriculum for the fall semester with two new seminars that focus on religious prejudice. The courses are designed to give students a deeper understanding of the historical development of anti‑Jewish and anti‑Muslim bias and how those attitudes continue to appear in contemporary society.

Course details

The first seminar, listed as UGS 201‑738, will explore Islam, covering its history, core beliefs, and the evolution of anti‑Muslim attitudes. The second, UGS 201‑740, is dedicated to antisemitism, tracing its roots from ancient times to present‑day expressions, including common tropes and themes that fuel anti‑Jewish sentiment.

Both courses are part of a broader effort by MSU to create spaces for students and staff to discuss religious hate, learn about its impact, and develop strategies for recognizing and confronting bias. The university has scheduled ongoing campus conversations on these topics, open to the entire university community. The next session is set for September 24 at 5 p.m.

Context and purpose

University officials say the new seminars and dialogue sessions are intended to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to identify religious prejudice and understand its effects on individuals and communities. The initiative reflects a growing national focus on religious discrimination and the role higher‑education institutions can play in educating future leaders about hate and tolerance.

MSU’s effort aligns with similar discussions taking place at colleges across the country, where administrators are responding to incidents of religious hate crimes and bias reports. By integrating these topics into the academic curriculum, the university hopes to foster a more informed and respectful campus environment.

Community response

Students and faculty have expressed interest in the new offerings, noting that a structured academic approach complements existing informal discussions about faith and prejudice. While the courses are academic in nature, they also provide a platform for personal reflection and community building among participants of diverse backgrounds.

For more information about the seminars and upcoming campus conversations, members of the MSU community can visit the university’s official website or contact the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
