Michigan State Police Helicopter Stops High‑Speed Freeway Race on M‑10

Early Thursday morning, Michigan State Police used an aviation unit to intervene in a dangerous high‑speed race on the M‑10 freeway near Grand River. At approximately 12:30 a.m. on August 8, two vehicles—a orange Camaro and a black Mustang—were recorded traveling between 120 and 130 miles per hour southbound.

Helicopter surveillance and pursuit

The state police helicopter, identified as Trooper 2, followed the two cars as they raced in tandem down the freeway. “We’ve got two vehicles, it’s like they’re racing, 120‑plus,” the pilot reported over the radio. The aircraft maintained visual contact, providing real‑time intelligence to ground units.

Ground units converge

At the Grand River exit, the drivers left the freeway and were quickly surrounded by Michigan State Police ground units. Additional troopers converged at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Elizabeth Street, closing in on the suspects.

According to the pilot, “It’s like they’re having some issues with the passengers,” indicating that the occupants were not cooperating. One passenger in the Camaro resisted officers before being placed under control and arrested.

Police statement

Michigan State Police 2nd District posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the aviation unit’s aerial perspective “allows us to address dangerous driving while helping reduce the risk to everyone on the road.” The department emphasized that the operation was intended to protect public safety and deter reckless behavior on state highways.

Public‑safety implications

High‑speed racing on public roadways poses a significant threat to motorists, passengers, and emergency responders. By employing aerial assets, the state police demonstrated a proactive approach to monitoring and intervening in such incidents. The arrests serve as a reminder that reckless driving will be pursued aggressively, especially when it endangers the broader community.

Residents in the Grand Rapids area and surrounding counties are encouraged to report unsafe driving and to remain vigilant on busy corridors like M‑10. The Michigan State Police continue to leverage technology, including helicopters and dash‑cameras, to enhance roadway safety across the state.
